Run to Overcome: The Inspiring Story of an American Champion's Long-Distance Quest to Achieve a Big Dream Paperback – July 1, 2014
Purchase options and add-ons
When Meb Keflezighi signed up to run the Boston Marathon in 2014, no one expected him to be the first to cross the finish line. But if there’s one thing Meb knows how to do, it’s overcome. Yet Meb is the living embodiment of the American dream. His family came to the U.S. to escape poverty and a violent war; 12-year-old Meb spoke no English at the time and had never raced a mile. Thanks to hard work and determination, he excelled academically and became an Olympic silver medalist. But it all came crashing down when Meb, a favorite for the Beijing Olympics, fractured his hip and pelvis during the trials and was left literally crawling. That same day, he lost his close friend and fellow marathoner to a cardiac arrest. Devastated, Meb was about to learn whether his faith in God, the values his parents had taught him, and his belief that he was born to run were enough to see him through. Run to Overcome is the story of a true American champion who discovered the real meaning of victory against all odds. Now with an updated chapter after Meb’s amazing finish in Boston.

From the Back Cover
When Meb Keflezighi (Kef-lez-ghee) signed up to run the Boston Marathon in 2014, no one expected him to be the first one to cross the finish line. But Meb’s life is all about hope and second chances―starting with his very survival. The child of a small African country ravaged by a brutal war, Meb arrived in America with nothing but the clothes on his back, speaking no English, and never having raced a mile. So how did he end up an A student, one of the most celebrated and respected athletes of his generation, winner of the 2009 New York City Marathon, and at the age of 38, the first American man in 31 years to win the Boston Marathon?
His story sounds like the living embodiment of the American dream . . . but Meb’s path to victory hasn’t been smooth. Not long after he stood on the Olympic podium as a silver medalist in 2004, it all came crashing down. Everything he once knew to be true was tested―his faith in God, his values, and his belief that he was born to run.
Run to Overcome tells the inspirational story of a man who discovered the real meaning of victory, and shares the secrets to overcoming the odds in your own life.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 8, 2015Meb Keflezighi is known to many for the silver medal in 2004 Olympic Games in Athens and for his magnificent wins in New York and Boston Marathons. Yet few of us were aware of his exciting personal story of migration from Eritrea, a less known country of Africa located between Sudan and Ethiopia, to Italy and then USA. Born in a family of ten siblings, Meb learned early in his life that nothing is given and you have to fight hard to fulfill your dreams. Eventually, he (as well as his brothers and sisters) overcame the odds, educated himself, exploited his enormous talent in running and prosper. Meb's secret to success is the strict adherence to his belief system which was ingrained by his parents and consists of a mix of christian values, hard work ethos and perseverance.
Besides offering an inspirational story, the book has some other interesting points, too. It provides a glance into the life of an elite runner; his training regime, economic remuneration and contracts offered, nutrition, reconciliation of professional requirements and family life, psychological downturns and other issues which can be interesting for fans or athletes of distance running.
Overall, i enjoyed the book and i recommend it. The language is good, the structure proper and the narrative easy going. If i were to be critical, i would highlight author's tendency to be overly idealistic. The notion, which transcends the whole book and suggests that if you try hard enough and be a good guy, the universe will conspire to help you achieve your dreams is somewhat naive - according to my opinion. That said, the book is indeed inspiring even for a - somewhat- cynic guy like me!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 10, 2011Ever since I saw Meb conquer the 2009 NY marathon with the USA singlet on, I have been a huge fan! Hearing his story is inspiring, reading it firsthand in 'Run to Overcome' is a heartfelt look into Meb's life journey. Meb writes about his family's roots in Eritrea and how much his parents sacrificed to get him and his siblings to a safer environment. After years of separation and preparation, his father was able to get the family to Italy and ultimately the U.S. Meb's story is the essence of the American dream- immigrant comes to the land of opportunity, works hard, and can achieve anything he wants in life. The fact that he is now an Olympic silver medalist and one of the fastest endurance runners in the country is astonishing and wonderful. The other piece of this book that is wonderful to read is how close Meb is to his parents, siblings, wife, children, friends, and his coaches. He appears to be a genuinely caring person who is thankful to have a strong network of friends and family in his life and never takes them for granted. I loved this book and I hope to see Meb conquer many more races and goals in his lifetime. I would highly recommend this book to Meb fans, runners, and also to anyone looking for an inspiring read. It will make you want to do more with your life and be your best self.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2014Meb has an amazing story that all people, not just runners, can appreciate. I most enjoyed reading about his family's story coming to America from Eritrea. I cried with joy several times throughout this book...so moving and inspiring. He and his family are just amazing people who have never given up and have worked incredibly hard for their successes.
Another part I enjoyed was reading about his injuries and struggles....not because I'm happy he got injured but because being a runner myself, it is nice to know that I'm not alone! Runners of ALL levels need to train and recover properly in order to avoid injury. And even amazing runners like Meb have bad race days...you just have to think long term, accept it, rest, and try again.
What keeps me from 5 stars is I felt that the book covered way too much in nitty gritty race details and times...they became a little tedious to read through and I found myself skimming over those parts to get back to the overarching story. I'm sure the more serious running audience appreciates, but I'm a little more casual and run as a hobby.
Overall very enjoyable read!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 17, 2023I bought this book and read it years ago because I was coaching cross country and looking for runners' stories to inspire my runners. Meb Keflezighi (pronounced kuhfleezgi?) has led an amazing life. His and his large family's story is one of faith, love, hope, and hard work. It's also a story about the American dream and why our country needs immigrants. Don't know why exactly, but my (at the time) ten year old daughter, not usually a reader of books, loved this one. I bought it for our school library and recommend it often.
Along with Meb's book, I also recommend Lopez Lomong's autobiography "Running for My Life."
- Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2014I loved this easy to read story of Meb. The entire story was focused around Meb, embedded in his social circles of family, friends, dreamers (other elite athletes) and kind strangers. Not only do you get to meet the champion, but you get to meet those who supported him and believed in him. For example, my pre-teen daughter identified with Meb's coach, Bob Larson.
This book is appropriate for all ages and I believe is especially great for young athletes. It teaches the story of the American dream that many of my middle school students can identify with and it teaches the story of what it means to have faith in yourself and to let God provide you strength when you are out of your own. You get to see how Meb negotiates the college recruiting process as well as be a college athlete and stellar student.
Run to Overcome also takes you into the details and nuances of being an elite athlete. Very eye-opening and ultimately, inspirational.
